African Dance Demonstration Movement as Therapy and Expression

Wednesday, February 22, 2023, marked the first Black History Month celebration at Peninsula Family Service (PFS). The PFS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee curated an inclusive cultural experience for all staff, Board, and guests to celebrate Black History Month. The experience included African art and artifacts on display, music and dance performances, as well as a presentation to honor Black Military Veterans.

Guests arrived at PFS Headquarters to the sound of African Drums played by Tamir Luqman and company, and then moved upstairs to enjoy Southern Soul Food, Catering By Angela and desserts from Whipp’d by Hope. Heather Cleary, PFS CEO, kicked off the presentation, with Charles Hansen, PFS CPO, honoring four local Black Veterans.

Among the honored were, Henry Rainer and Lonnie Moore. Henry Rainer is a World War II Navy Veteran, turning 99 years old in March. He is one of the last original Black Business owners in East Palo Alto, with Rainer Service Station. Lonnie Moore is a Vietnam Veteran and has recently been recognized for his 44 years of service at San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, with the Safe Drivers Award. The final acts of the evening included music, dance performance, and a soul line dance.

Special guest, Joyce Porter of the County Commission on Aging, commented, “I had a wonderful time tonight and stayed until the end. I can’t thank you enough. The people, the entertainment, and the food was outstanding. I’ve paid for less! I nabbed some extra bookmarks for my grandsons.”

Heather Cleary, PFS CEO reflected on the event stating, “It was a joyful night full of stories, music, dancing, and delicious food. The PFS team turned out in great numbers to learn and celebrate Black History Past, Present and Future.”
